Dr. Azran Azhim's Lecture

Week 11 / (18/4/2017)

NCBI

Ncbi stands for National Center for Biotechnology Information. It contains 5 databases:-

  •       Nucleotype
  •       Blast
  •             Gene
  •       PubMed
  •       DNA & RNA

We focus on using the PubMed and Blast. PubMed is used to search articles related to biotechnology. To narrow the scope of searching, we can insert search field tags such as [AU] - author, [TI] ā€“ title and [ED] ā€“ editor. We can also use PubMed to search Gene and from there we can obtain DNA and Protein sequences for various species.

Blast stands for Basic Local Alignment Search Tool and the function is to align two or more sequence and make comparison. Other than that, we also can analyse the percentage identity of many species.

Besides that, we are also introduced to a software called CLC sequence viewer. This software allowed us to make:-

  •         Nucleotide analysis
  •          Protein Analysis
  •          Alignments and trees
  •          Homology Analysis

CLC software is an alternative way to find the alignment other than using the Blast , we can use this software without connecting to the internet and it is much easier.
